Meghan Pfau Am Lit Honors: Compare and Contrast Essay Draft October 28, 2014 When thinking of Salem, Massachusetts, many think of the witch trials. When thinking of rural Georgia in the 20th century, many think of racism and sexism. These drastically different locations yielded different women, but at the root of both the womensââ¬â¢ lives was faith. Celie grows up in an abusive relationship and is involved in an involuntary marriage. She is forced to learn her identity and develops a loving relationship with a woman named Shug. Elizabeth Proctor must deal with the ongoing problems around her as the Salem witch trials progress. The two women lead different lives, but both suffer through their husbandââ¬â¢s betrayal. Proctor: Ripping the warrant: Out with you!â⬠On the contrary, Mr.__ expresses no affection towards Celie. The couple has never experien ced genuine feelings and passionate love for each other. Celie explains that although they were married, they were never connected spiritually or emotionally. Celie says to Mr.__: You know, he say, you use to remind me of a bird. Way back when you first come to live with me. You was so skinny, Lord, he say. And the least little thing happen, you looked about to fly away. You saw that, I say. I saw it, he said, just too big a fool to let myself care. Well, I say, us lived through it. We still man and wife, you know, he say. Naw, I say, we never was (135). Mr.__ never tries to protect Celie. He nearly tries to cause her pain, especially when he hides the many letters addressed to Celie. These letters were written from Celieââ¬â¢s beloved sister, Nettie. Celie had no contact with her sister and simply believed her sister had died. The revelation of the hidden letters is an emotional moment that unlocks many hard feelings that cause Celie to be furious and defensive towards Mr.__. In Elizabethââ¬â¢s relationship with Proctor, she proves to be an adamant wife who holds an abiding grudge against her
